This revolution is epitomized by applications of these technologies to the study of the genetic basis for adaptive phenotypes, which has fascinated evolutionary and ecological geneticists since the middle of the last century. Pinpointing the actual genes that underlie complex and diverse phenotypes, however, has remained elusive for all but the most developed model systems (e.g. humans). This is changing rapidly as next-generation technologies are being applied to non-model species.
